In 2012, the Central Archaeological Council approved the construction of an open-air theatre in the east moat of the Venetian walls of the old city of Chania, near Santa Luccia bastion. The theatre would have a capacity of 1,350 and would serve as a venue for cultural events in Chania. The main condition for its construction was to not cause visual disturbance to the archaeological site. Thus, at present, the theatre features rows made of compressed soil and portable foldable seats are used which are removed during the winter season. During the summer season, the theatre hosts several theatre performances and concerts. The site is managed by the CHANIA MUNICIPAL PUBLIC BENEFIT ENTERPRISE FOR CULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT – CENTRE FOR MEDITERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE
