The Municipal Art Gallery is located right in the heart of the city of Chania. As an integral part of the city’s urban fabric, it is the main concrete example of the spirit of a city which, albeit provincial, has consistently been a hub of culture-related extroversion. An elegant 20th century building was chosen to house and showcase an artwork collection which once belonged to the Municipality of Chania. The official opening took place in 2002 and since then, more than 60 exhibitions have been held and visited by the locals and the visitors of Chania.
The Municipal Art Gallery has never been complacent or narrow-minded. Following the fulfilment of the vision of acquiring a proper space, it built a solid cooperation with renowned Greek and foreign artists, curators, and major museums of Greece and has been regularly hosting significant private collections. Meanwhile, the Municipal Art Gallery’s main concern is to never cease to play an active social role. Thus, in parallel with all major exhibitions, it organizes events and programmes for adults and children as proof of its strong link with the citizens of Chania and the public in general. And let us not forget its important publishing activity. For more than twenty years the Municipal Art Gallery has been consistently publishing exhibition catalogues and other art books, an effort which has complemented and contributed added value to all its actions and has also produced valuable items for future study and reflection.
The efforts of the Municipal Art Gallery’s Board of Directors, Artistic Committee, collaborators, employees, paired with the firm support provided by the Municipality of Chania, made the Municipal Art Gallery a leader of the city’s artistic development. It is a hub of culture with an individual character and identity, which keeps abreast of the changes and the needs of the society by listening to it and reminds us of what this unique city is all about.
